It's been said that the more things change, the more they remain the same. When our company doors opened in January 1982, we were a hungry young startup ready to create strong and lasting partnerships. Our founder, Rollie Wiegers, was known for conducting business on a handshake, which created a foundation of trust with our customers that is still present today.

In the years to come, we worked tirelessly to grow our partnerships and our business. Thanks to the hard work of our associates and the hard market of 1984, the policies came flooding in, and we earned more than 10 times our goal for our first five-year business plan.

With solid financial backing and strong partnerships, we were on our way. In years to follow, we expanded our staff, developed technology, and created a strategy that allowed our partnerships to grow. It paid off. In 2006, we hit a major milestone by reaching our second billion in direct written premium. And with a resilience acquired through decades of sustained high performance, the company carried its original entrepreneurial spirit forward in new directions. Scottsdale Insurance recognized the need to fill a niche for management liability insurance and established Freedom Specialty Insurance Company in New York, which then branched out to Chicago and San Francisco. Scottsdale also became sole owner of Veterinary Pet Insurance; explored international opportunities with a Canadian insurer; and opened a commercial trucking insurance office in Eagan, Minnesota.

If you ask anyone, a key ingredient to Scottsdale Insurance's stability and success over the last 30 years is our associates. With an average tenure of 10 years with the company, our associates are not only talented and knowledgeable, but also caring. They are invested in the relationships they've created with their customers and coworkers.

At Scottsdale Insurance, we pride ourselves on a culture that fosters personal and professional growth, as well as a work environment where we are committed to give our best each day alongside people we genuinely care about. Flexible work schedules, vanpooling and a variety of recycling programs put Scottsdale Insurance at the forefront of corporate environmental responsibility. And in the community at large, the company has regularly won awards for activities such as United Way, food bank donations, blood drives, disaster relief, Casual Fridays, and holiday charity collections. In recognition of these efforts, Scottsdale Insurance earned the Work-Life Seal of Distinction by World at Work's Alliance for Work-Life Progress in 2012.

The company is strong and growing. With more than 1,450 associates, we're in a good place to do things that no other E&S carrier does—from innovating new ways to make our customers' jobs easier, to coming up with a way to ensure we will remain profitable regardless of market cycles. We've reaped the benefits of the insight and savvy of our founder and leaders like Max Williamson, Mike Miller and the entire Scottsdale Executive Leadership Team.

But the true catalyst for our success is our relationship-driven culture, which is still as alive and well today as it was when we began. The industry has changed considerably since then, but commitment to our customers is as steadfast as ever. It's what has allowed us to accomplish so much. It's what will continue to pave the way for more opportunities.

And we think that's pretty remarkable.
